Dr. Balakrishnan K.P, MD., DM. (in cardiology), and FICC., is a highly accomplished senior interventional cardiologist in Malappuram, Perinthalmanna and Calicut with over twenty years of professional medical practice. As an expert in interventional cardiology, Dr. Balakrishnan has the distinction of having performed the first successful primary angioplasty, pacemaker implantation, elective angiogram, and left main angioplasty in South Malabar, Kerala.
Dr. Balakrishnan has performed over 25000 angiograms and more than 8000 angioplasties during the span of his career. He has displayed proficiency in both academic and association activities and played a pivotal role in various international trials in interventional cardiology and diabetes.
As a Central Working Committee Member of the IMA, Dr. Balakrishnan is well-recognized among the medical fraternity. He currently holds the prestigious post of President of the Indian College of Cardiology, Kerala Chapter and is a former President of the Interventional Cardiology Council of Kerala (ICCK). Dr. Balakrishnan had previously served as the President of IMA, Kozhikode, and Chairman of IMA AMS, Kerala. He was also the Chairman of the Research Cell of IMA, Kerala, and Vice-President of IMA, Kerala, and IMA, KSB.
Dr. Balakrishnan is the Director and Consultant cardiologist at Dr. BK’s Institute of Cardiac Care and Research. He also heads the Department of Cardiology and is the Director of Starcare Institute of Cardiology at Starcare Hospital, Kozhikode. Prior to this, Dr. Balakrishnan was the HOD of Cardiology at KIMS Al Shifa Super Specialty Hospital and DM WIMS Medical College, Wayanad.
Dr. Balakrishnan is the proud recipient of various awards and recognitions, the most recent being the “Best Doctor Award” for 2020 from IMA. He is widely recognized for his expertise and knowledge in cardiology treatments and cardiac surgery in Malappuram and Calicut.
He is married to Dr. Sangeetha Balakrishnan, Consultant ENT Surgeon and Specialist in Professional Voice Care at Mesiarc, Calicut, and Managing Partner of Dr. BK’s Institute of Cardiac Care and Research. His daughter, Neelima, is an Ophthalmologist, currently pursuing MCH in Ophthalmology and son, Harigovind, is a medical student. Apart from belonging to the same profession, Dr. Balakrishnan and his family share a common interest in music also.
